5 Tips on how to make it perfectly you

Personally feel that engagement photos is one of the most important steps that you take when planning your wedding. They’re a great chance to connect with your wedding photographer and get comfortable with their style of posing and how you will be interacting on the day of your wedding. However they can also be a tad stressful. From figuring out where you want to do the session to what to wear. So today I am going to break it down on how to create the perfect engagement session and make the most of your experience.

Below are my top five tips for creating your perfect engagement session!

1) Pick the perfect location!

I like to ask my couples when we first meet, What are some of your favorite activities or where did he propose? Using a place that has significance to you both makes the images sooo much more special. If you treat the session like another date activity it will help ease your mind when in front of the camera. The familiarity of your surroundings and already knowing you enjoy being there really helps to bring out those authentic smiles and laughs.

Engagement Location

Have a date activity planned. Do you like going to a bar or wineries. Cool, let’s do that. Are you picnic people. Let’s find a fun park and set up a picnic for you two. Love to sail? Yes please!! Let’s plan a sailing date and hit the water. Do you! Whatever that may be and be yourselves!

Also, consider how you would like your final images to look. Do you love being near the water, beautiful views, the hustle and bustle of the city or maybe the romantic architecture of a building. Use that desired look to help choose your location that will bring that vision to life. When in doubt refer to your photographer for location ideas that they think would work for you.

2) Don’t worry about the camera!!

Now this is an important tip. Most couples biggest stress is that they have never had professional pictures taken other than possibly school pictures. DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT! No one expects you to be professional models or know what to do. My job and any professional photographers job is to coach you through the entire session. From where to look, where to place your hands, even how to bend your arms and legs. My goal is to never make you feel stiff, or awkward. Now keep in mind you might feel a little awkward with the cues I have you do at first but I promise it will look soo good in front of the camera and will bring out that true love you have for one another. Anyone can do it with a little direction. TRUST ME!

3) Dress to impress!!

Yes, you should stay true to who you are and your personalities but also keep in mind these are your engagement photos and you want to look & feel your best. Don’t be afraid to get a little glammed up! I love when couples dress it up with cute dresses, heals, a fitted suit or dress shirt! Dress how you would if you were guests at someone else's wedding. Wear outfits that make you feel good and that fits you perfectly. It will always look amazing on camera and your confidence will shine through. Now you can always bring a second outfit! Maybe part of your session you want to be more casual. No worries do that then! Just make sure what you wear fits you properly. (Baggy clothes do not flatter you on film) Also remember jeans and a simple tee can be chic and classy too!

Also when choosing what to wear stick with neutral colors that compliment each other well. You never want to be to matchy matchy but you also don’t want to be in patterns and colors that are distracting and that’s all you can see when looking at your photos.

Ladies, consider professional hair and makeup before your session. If you are like me and doing hair and makeup isn't really your thing, go to a pro to make you look and feel your best for your session. It can even be right after a trial for your wedding make up.

4) Bring props!

Don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun with your session. If you have a fur baby bring them along! We love all furry friends and they always add an extra cute factor to your images. They also help keep you relaxed when starting off your session.

Wine lovers? Me too! Bring a bottle! Or even better CHAMPAGNE! A bottle of bubbly paired with Mr & Mrs glasses are soo cute and can help loosen you up while getting some super cute photos!

Are you car people? Sweet let’s park it somewhere pretty and use that too!

FLORAL’S!!! I love flowers soo much and I think bringing a bouquet add’s such elegance and volume to your images!

Basically let your imagination run wild. If it’s something that you two like to do or you think would be a fun idea. DO IT!

5) Trust your Photographer!! (MOST IMPORTANT TIP)

Now this may seem like a silly tip but engagement sessions and being in front of the camera causes anxiety. This is normal. It’s normal to feel a little stressed and want to control the situation. However, you hired your photographer because you love their work. You are drawn to their images and can see yourselves when looking through their portfolio. Know that they have your back and want you to enjoy yourselves, have fun and most importantly love the final product. Soo trust them. Trust their judgement in posing, location and any advice they give. The will always make sure to give you the best experience possible!
